EU-Life - Testing Biodiversity Credits in European Wetlands
Biodiversity Credit Pilot Project
Testing standards and methods for generating biodiversity credits in European wetlands — in partnership with NABU, the European Landowners’ Organization, and a consortium of conservation and finance experts.
The project is funded by the European Union
With the support of the European Union's LIFE programme, NABU and its project partners — including Sylva — are selecting pilot sites and testing standards and methods for generating biodiversity credits in European wetlands.
As natural biodiversity hotspots hosting 40 percent of all plant and animal species worldwide, wetlands represent an optimal environment for testing these financial mechanisms. Yet these ecosystems are under severe pressure: around 80 percent of the European wetlands that existed 100 years ago have been lost. The remaining areas face ongoing threats from agriculture, drainage, and other forms of development.
By setting positive incentives for conservation-oriented land management in wetlands, LIFE Biodiv CrEW aims to identify the best models and methods, test their practical benefits for both supply- and demand-side stakeholders in pilot sites, and promote these findings to potential buyers and political decision-makers.
Biodiversity Credits & Certificates to be selected
Conservation targets
- Identify the best models and methods for biodiversity credits in European wetlands through practical pilot testing
- Test and demonstrate practical benefits for both supply-side (landowners, managers) and demand-side (corporate buyers) stakeholders
- Develop positive incentives for conservation-oriented land management in wetlands across multiple EU countries
- Promote findings and best practices to potential buyers and political decision-makers at EU level
- Build trust and enable knowledge exchange between stakeholders through study tours to pilot sites
