Restoring the Fazenda Santa Maria to a diverse and natural forest

Fazenda Santa Maria

Brazil | 966 ha

We envision the restoration of a long-term livestock pasture into a diverse and natural forest. Regenerating the Fazenda Santa Maria will not just return the richness of the Amazon, it will kick-start a reforestation economy that offers green and sustainable jobs, learning, and local opportunities.

Our goal is to use the proceeds from the sale of carbon credits to restore 724ha of pasture and boost 242ha of secondary forest regrowth.

Conservation targets

Our project aims to realize the following conservation targets:

  1. Restoring native forest through Applied Natural Regeneration or Applied Nucleation
  2. Protecting existing forest
  3. Providing an alternative income stream from credit sales to landowner to replace his cattle business
  4. Creating a restoration economy and learning opportunities on restoration and sustainable agriculture for local communities
  5. Improving soil-moisture holding capacity through regeneration
  6. Increasing below-ground root biomass to reduce erosion and landslides through regeneration
